It’ll be held in a relaxing space in historical Kunsthof
The building entrance is located diagonally across from the museum Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, on the other side of Genslerstraße
What will you do in the workshop?
1. Making a pot of colored water by reusing tea leaves
2. Tie the fabric together with rubber bands or hemp string to create patterns on the fabric
3. Boil the fabric in colored water
4. Mordant the cloth with a blend of nails and vinegar to darken the color
The tannin ingredient in the tea leaves reacts with the iron ingredient extracted from the nail to produce a warm gray color.
5. Remove the tied threads and open the fabric to see the pattern and color

Natural dye "Kusaki-zome草木染め"
is a Japanese dyeing method in which natural and everyday materials such as flowers, herbs, vegetable peels, Coffee grounds, Tea are used to dye fabrics.
In this workshop you will dye Cha-fu茶布 (tea cloth) .
Tea leaves are reused to dye cloth after drinking.
After boiling in a pot and dipping in a diluted nail solution, the tannin in the tea leaves reacts with iron to change the pigment component into a deep color, you can tie-dye your own favorite patterns.
The dyed cloth can be used as tea cloth / tableware / deco.
You can experience the Kusaki-zome with textile artist Yurika Saito.
