Explore the traditional cultures of tea and dyeing in this hands-on workshop that reuses spent tea leaves to discover new creative possibilities with tea leaves and circulation.

Participants will dye fabric Linen-Chabu茶布 or Cotton-Furoshiki風呂敷 scarf using a Japanese tea-dyeing technique that is rare in Berlin, led by textile artist Yurika Saito, who has conducted many natural dye workshops across Germany.
This is a valuable opportunity to experience a unique craft firsthand. Throughout the process, engage all five senses for a mindful, slow-paced experience.

Yurika explored nature and culture across Japan and around the world. Since 2022, she has been practicing natural dyeing in Berlin using waste materials—such as spent tea leaves and onion skins from a restaurant—through her “Living Dyeing Project,” and offering hands-on workshop experiences.

Materials we use for Dyeing
-Fabric
-Used or old tea leaves that are no -longer suitable for drinking
-Rust as a color fixative
-WaterAll provided.

Dye the fabric already prepared.
-German cotton: lightweight; suitable for scarves, furoshiki for wrapping cherished items, and home decor.
-Polish linen: thick; suitable for Chabu茶布 tea ceremony mats and tablecloths

For those who have participated in the past or who have fabric they’d like to dye
Please note:
-Fabric weight up to 100g due to the pot’s capacity
-Please wash beforehand
-Polyester doesn’t work for dye, has to be cotton, linen, wool, silk etc. -
Colored water may splash, so please wear clothes that can get a little dirty
